Overview
Group systems analysis evaluating the UK's readiness for widespread electric vehicle adoption — examining technical, social, political, economic and environmental factors, identifying systemic barriers and recommending interventions to accelerate the transition.
Business Problem
The UK's transition to electric vehicles is shaped by interconnected technical, economic, environmental and behavioural factors with competing stakeholder priorities. The team needed to structure this complex, ill-defined national policy challenge before recommendations could be made.
Objectives
- Evaluate the UK's readiness for widespread EV adoption
- Identify systemic barriers across technical, social, political, economic and environmental dimensions
- Explore stakeholder perspectives and competing priorities
- Recommend interventions to accelerate EV adoption
Approach
- Applied Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) to structure the problem
- Developed a Rich Picture, CATWOE, Root Definition and Purposeful Activity Model
- Built SODA cognitive maps to surface stakeholder reasoning
- Conducted stakeholder analysis and supporting research
My Role
Team member and lead. Contributed to systems analysis, supported stakeholder identification, helped apply SSM, contributed to SODA cognitive maps, supported research, report writing and recommendations, and collaborated with the team throughout delivery.
Deliverables
- SSM analysis (Rich Picture, CATWOE, Root Definition, Purposeful Activity Model)
- SODA cognitive map
- Stakeholder analysis
- Group report
- Recommendations for improving UK EV readiness
Challenges
- Balancing multiple stakeholder perspectives across a national policy issue
- Reconciling interconnected technical, economic, environmental and behavioural factors
Results & Outcomes
- Identified key systemic barriers affecting EV adoption
- Analysed stakeholder interests and competing priorities
- Applied systems thinking to a complex national policy challenge
- Produced structured recommendations for improving UK EV readiness
